Skagit Volunteer Center: Open for business!
Remember a few weeks ago when I mentioned we’d be opening a volunteer center? Well, after many months of planning and physical labor, I am proud to announce that the Skagit Volunteer Center is open for business! We are holding drop in hours for volunteers Monday through Thursday, 10:00am – 12:00pm or by appointment from 8:30 to 4:30. We’re using the space to inform the community about ways they can get involved!
You are officially invited to attend our Grand Opening celebration on May 26th, 3:30-5:30 at 2221 Riverside Drive, Mount Vernon. We will have a ribbon cutting ceremony, dedication to longtime volunteer Bill McIlraith, food, and schmoozing. It will be a great day!
Here are a few pictures of the process of our renovations!
Martin Luther King, Jr Day of Service
We are so proud of the great work being done by our AmeriCorps State and VISTA members on the Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service.
Members of the Skagit ARRA team have organized a toiletry drive to benefit the Skagit YMCA’s Oasis Teen Shelter and Skagit Domestic Violence and Support Services. The Skagit VISTA team is planning an awesome video that will focus on making nutritious meals on a budget.
Members of the Northwest Washington Reading Corps have planned the following projects:
- Library Card Drive at Skagit Children’s Museum in Burlington
- Leading hands-on activities at Everett Children’s Museum
- Putting together care packages for the Womencare domestic violence shelter in Bellingham
- Pancake breakfast benefiting Whatcom Middle School in Bellingham (WMS was destroyed in a fire this past November)
- Organizing the pantry at Sean Humphrey House in Bellingham
- Serving a meal at Friendship House in Mount Vernon
- Playground improvements at one of the Head Start locations in Bellingham
9/11 Day of Service
Over 50 AmeriCorps State and VISTA members sponsored by the Skagit County Community Action Agency (SCCAA) served their community during the 9/11 Day of Service by helping the CitiPoint Food Bank warehouse after relocation. These members moved and loaded boxes of food, organized flats of canned food, prepared paper and personal goods such as diapers, split large bags of beans into family-sized portions, and more. With our man and woman power, the NWWRC, SCCAA American Reinvestment and Recovery Act (ARRA) AmeriCorps team and SCCAA Skagit VISTA team were able to reorganize the entire warehouse in just two hours.
