NWWRC Application Process

Northwest Washington Reading Corps

Before Applying

We highly encourage anyone applying to one of our AmeriCorps programs to spend time getting to know our program to see if it's a good fit for you.

Potential returning members: Please refer to the Returning Member Application Packet prior to applying.

Please review the position description here.

Our positions are listed as NWWRC Team Member on the My.AmeriCorps.gov site.

When applying please:

  • Make sure that all fields are complete and accurate.
  • Write an in-depth Motivational Statement (see instructions below).
  • Write a "Why I Volunteer Statement" in the community service text box
  • Your Why I Volunteer Statement should address what motivates you to volunteer in your community (or a community entirely different than your hometown if applicable). Include examples.
  • Ensure that your references are complete before submitting.

Motivational Statement

Please complete your Motivational Statement as follows:

  • Ignore the given prompt: We would like to understand more about you and your reasons for applying to AmeriCorps. Take a few minutes and consider those experiences that have made you the person you are today. Please share with us one of these experiences and how it sparked your interest in community service.
  • Address each of the following questions:
  • What compels you to serve? What challenges do you expect from service; what do you find attractive about those?
  • Beyond literacy, what impacts do you expect to make in the fight against poverty?
  • What key strengths would you bring to working with your teammates? What are your expectations with regard to working on a team?
  • Your statement must be at least 2,000 characters in length and free from major spelling and grammatical errors.

Important notes:

  • We will not process applications that do not have complete references. Your application will automatically be denied if references are incomplete. Please make sure that your references have completed the online form (or that you have submitted letters of recommendation) prior to sending us your application.
  • The short-answer areas on other parts of the application have a maximum possible length of 2,000 characters.
  • The maximum possible length for the Motivational Statement is 3,000 characters
  • The application will time you out after 15 minutes on one page. We recommend typing your longer answers in a word processor and then copying/pasting them into the online application. Save often!

Application

Complete the online application, providing two professional references. Again, please make sure your references are completed BEFORE submitting your application to our program.

If you need assistance in filling out your application, watch Meghann's how-to video here.

Review

Once a complete application is received it is reviewed by program staff and supervisors. If approved the applicant is offered an interview with a Project Supervisor.

Interviews

The applicant has an interview with the Project Supervisor. Fair warning: Your photo will be taken!

The applicant is required to bring the following to their interview:

  • Social Security card
  • Proof of Citizenship (passport OR state ID and birth certificate)
  • Questions about the position

If the Project Supervisor feels that the applicant would be a good fit for the team, his/her application will be sent along to the service site(s) of the applicant's choosing.

Applicants to the Northwest Washington Reading Corps: The applicant's input is very important during this step, as the Northwest Washington Reading Corps does not place applicants. Rather, we match the needs and goals of the applicant to those of the schools. Applicants to the NWWRC may interview at one or more school sites.  Applicants may be offered a position at one or more school sites and will have to decide where they would like to serve. Once they've accepted a position at a school site the applicant is ready to enroll.

Enrollment

The applicant comes to the program office to fill out enrollment paperwork and receive any important information regarding the first weeks of their service (including orientation and training).
